Huge thanks to Berkley for the advanced copy of this book. I am pretty sure this is the first time Berkley has approved me so I guess that means I'm moving up in the world? 😆
When I first saw this cover, I really wan't the biggest fan. I am usually a sucker for a cover but it was the synopsis that got me this time. The idea of finding your soulmate after death and then chasing them down, without them having any recollection of who you are, I knew it was going to be hilarious. And it totally was. The cover also grew on me. It has a 90's nostalgia vibe to it and that's kind of what this book is too. It has a bit of a nostalgia vibe to it. With all of the pop culture references, this is going to be one of those books I read years from now and it reminds me of today.
The poster in the window beside her is advertising STD medication. "I...I gave him chlamydia," I finish.
The Love of my Afterlife is laugh out loud funny. I was giving my daughter a play by play while I was reading and there were times I had to put the book down because I couldn't see the pages through my tears of laughter. Based on the premise you have to expect some ridiculousness to happen but the number of times that Delphie foibled at one point felt endless. Don't get me wrong, there are many serious parts to this book. It deals with abandonment, and the long term traumatic effects of bullying. Both of which are wrapped up almost completely. I do wish we had gotten some closure on Delphie's dad but what we got worked.
I often see the question "What fictional world would you want to live in," asked across bookstagram, booktok and booktube. I haven't really had a world that I could say 100% yes i want to live there because most of the time, I would probably die if I existed in that place. 😆 I finally have an answer. I would love to live in Delphie's London. All of the characters that surround her and that she meets during her quest make me want to join their little community in the making. I stayed up until 2am finishing The Love of My Afterlife because I never wanted it to end and I could not put it down. I had to know how everything turned out. Now, there are some twists and turns here (there obviously have to be when someone is on a task that is life or death and they literally can't tell anyone about it). Some of which I ferreted out almost from the start, some that took me 50% through to figure out, and some I didn't see coming at all. Every one of them made this book the perfection that it is. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ uproariously good stars for The Love of My Afterlife from me!
